Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County Announces Youth of the Year, New Scholarship
The local Boys & Girls Clubs proudly announced Sedro-Woolley Member, Gavin Clifton, as the next Youth of the Year during a special celebration held on January 28th at The Skagit Casino. Youth of the Year is the organization’s highest honor, recognizing an outstanding young person who demonstrates leadership, academic excellence, service to others, and a strong commitment to personal growth.
Selected from a group of exceptional finalists, Gavin stood out for his dedication to his community, resilience, and passion for creating positive change. As Youth of the Year, he will serve as an ambassador for the Clubs, representing the voices and experiences of youth across Skagit County.
This year, due to the generosity of Barrett Financial Community Caring Project, Gavin will also receive a $5,000 scholarship to pursue post-secondary education & training.
Scholarships are traditionally reserved for youth who win State, Regional, or National levels. This new scholarship program ensures that Skagit youth have further support. This scholarship was developed by Barrett Financial's owner, Amy Hong, who has a deep passion for the role education plays in building great futures.
Gavin Clifton will have the opportunity to compete in Seattle for Washington State Youth of the Year this coming spring and will participate in multiple Youth of the Year events throughout 2026. Gavin is a sophomore at Sedro-Woolley High School and has been involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County since 2021. Gavin is interested in architectural engineering and plans to attend the University of Washington.
"Each of [our Youth of the Year Finalists] has a story shaped by mentors, families, teachers, staff, and supporters who chose to show up, to listen, and to believe." said Jeremy Hiatt, Chief Executive & Operations Officer, "When we invest in young people, we invest in stronger communities and a better future for all of us."
The Youth of the Year program highlights the importance of investing in young people and providing safe, supportive spaces where they can thrive. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County strives to inspire all young people and empower them to reach their full potential as productive, responsible, caring adults in their community. And they are thankful to Cascade Natural Gas, Skagit Transportation, and Showcase Your Shine with Rebecca Murray for making the evening possible.
